Use the Print label Action button action to print labels on Brother RuggedJet printers.
Brother P-Touch Software allows you to input doForms fields into a specified label size for a specific printer. Make sure you have the latest installation of P-Touch software installed. You can do this by selecting ‘Help’ -> ‘Check for updates.’ If you do not currently have the software installed, you can follow the directions and install it from here.
Once you are inside the P-Touch editor, you must make sure the printer you are planning to use is selected in the top left corner of the screen.
Now you can select a paper size of the label that you want to use. You can do that in this drop-down selection:
Once you select the paper size and the printer, you can start building the label. For this example, I am dragging in a text box and giving it some sample text. Note: If the text box is empty, the text box will be deleted, so be sure to add some sample text or a few spaces to keep it active.
THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT: You want to right-click the object you added to label, select properties, click the expanded tab, and find the “Object Name”.
You want to customize the Object Name to something easily identifiable. For this example, I am going to name it “Sample Text”. Repeat this process for every object you bring into the label, as it is important to have when you are mapping it to your doForms fields.
Once you have completed your design, you can hit File -> hover over Transfer Template -> Select Transfer. A dialogue box like this should show up:
Notice how the label we just created has a Name and a Key Assign. You want to keep note of what both of those are so we can correctly upload it into doForms. Select the label you created and hit “Save Transfer File” on the top left. It should save to your computer as a .blf file.
Now we can go into doForms and open our action button with the “Print Label” action.
You want to set up your button properties to look like this:
Select “Brother” as the printer from the drop-down menu.
Select “Use P-Touch Designer file”.
Upload the .blf file of the label you just created.
Put the template name in this text box.
Write the key assigned to that in the “Template key” text box.
Underneath those properties you will see four options: File PDF, File PNG, File ZPL, and Manual. You want to select Manual.
In the “Field” drop down, select the doForms field you want on the label.
In the “template field name” box, type the Object Name of the field you gave it in the label on the P-Touch software.
When you click on the print button for the first time after publishing, your printer will download the template you created once as a new designer template. This should take only a few seconds. After it downloads and prints, you can use it as many times as you want without having to download it again!
